Whimsical Underwater World....ROATAN

Mornings are sweet. As we each awaken, we brew our in room Honduras thick, rich coffee for our lanai session in hammock and chairs, with vista of blue Caribe and our new day. Amie likes to join us, to assure Kara her beauty rest. As we venture to our desayuno (breakfast) the five deer greet us. Buckles is the most friendly and allows us to pet him if our other hand has food.

Today's adventures begin with a quick walk into town to catch a water taxi to West Bay, the next bay south. We welcome the perspective of town from the water; docks with fishing and scuba boats, restaurants, cantinas, church, and tiendas line the shore. The Caribbean is shining with all it's glory of turquoise waters gleaming above white sand, and purple hues of waters gleaming above the chain of reef.

Happy to see Roatan still has some open beachfront land. One would only wonder how long that will last? Until West Bay greets us with condos, restaurants and more contrived tourism. It makes us happy we are staying in the more laid back, simple tourist outpost of West End.

Our bare feet are caressed by the silky, powdery, white sand of West Bay Beach as we find a spot in the shade of the Sea Grape trees. Snorkeling is an easy beach launch for Mama, with a channel in the reef to get to the deeper backside. What an aquarium wonderland this reef is!!! Crystal visibility as we peer into deep blue and reef below us teems with life; small, medium and large fish each have their niche in small, medium and large nooks and crannies of hard and soft corals. I see an octopus fully umbrellaed (!) on the flat reef. It was bluish(!) on first view, turns translucent, then goes through its array of textures to then blend with the coral it sits upon. Wow!

I love snorkeling with mom. She gets so excited and points at fish and squeals and laughs through her snorkel. Mom is a mermaid, that is where I get it from! Water is her element, she is nimble, strong and has great swimming endurance. We swam around a gorgeous rock outcrop island as our goal, making for another 2 hour session in the water!

Where is Waldo's slipper? Hanging from the Sea Grape tree! Happens when I toss Karen's slipper up into branches above to point out the Sea grapes to Mamasita..... it gets stuck!

We zoom in the water taxi back to relaxed West End, send Mamasita back in a land taxi to home at Land's End. Two sets of sisters, we chiquitas, go to Sun Downer's beach side palapa cantina for a refreshing margarita.

Our home, Land's End has celebrity Chef Frank for special surf and turf, lobster dinner. We dress up for fancy affair and start with our expanded resort "family" in the Green Flash Cantina.
